Perhaps the information presented in this article will not be new to some, but as it turned out in practice, few people used the use of this drug for medical purposes, and even more so, it is often confused with household glue “BF”.

First of all, I should say that this year I made a very valuable discovery for myself — medical glue “BF-6”. Now about how and where you can use it. Without going far for examples, remember how in the mountains, almost everyone has various kinds of minor injuries: abrasions and cuts, bleeding calluses, lips and skin of fingers cracked to the point of bleeding, as well as hangnails that always torment climbers and have to be constantly covered with a band-aid. My acquaintance with this miracle drug began in August 2013, during a trip to the Caucasus. My partner and I climbed 5 mountains in Shkhelda, after which we immediately moved to another region of the Caucasus — Bezengi. By that time, the skin on my fingers was badly cracked from active sun rays and cold, and my cracked lip was constantly bleeding, which stubbornly did not want to heal. Various creams, ointments, and hygienic lipsticks saved only temporarily, because during the day on the route the lipstick was licked off the lips, and the plaster was torn off the fingers. And so, by chance I learned from a friend who is a doctor by profession that wounds, cuts, abrasions and cracks on the skin are wonderfully treated with glue “BF-6”, the main thing is not to confuse it with household “BF”, which has several varieties, one of them is BF-19, shown below:

Household glue “BF-19”

BF-19 glue (Butyral (polyvinyl butyral) Phenolic (phenol formaldehyde)) is a thermosetting one-component polymerizing glue that can be used as a simple drying glue. After hot polymerization, it creates a slightly elastic seam with heat resistance up to 180 °C. There are different types of BF glue used for gluing non-ferrous metals, stainless steel, non-metals with metals (less elastic and more durable), as well as for repairing fabric products, in medicine for closing wounds (more elastic). It is a thick transparent liquid of yellow, red or brownish-brown color. BF glue is not subject to decay and corrosive effects, resistant to the effects of the atmosphere, water, oil and gasoline. BF glue is flammable.

BF-6 glue is a well-known external antiseptic used in medicine for disinfection and rapid healing of cuts, burns, cracks, scratches, abrasions and other minor skin injuries. The use of BF-6 for medical purposes began in the middle of the last century. Since then, many have included it in their first aid kits and successfully use it as first aid. BF-6 glue is not only a bactericidal, but also an insulating agent that creates a protective film on the skin surface that is resistant to chemical and mechanical influences, which helps to connect tissues without stitches. This glue is used to treat wounds in adults and children over one year old. Contraindications to the use of the product are hypersensitivity. In addition, BF-6 is used in dentistry to treat tooth roots during surgical treatment of inflammatory processes. The glue is a yellowish colorless liquid with a characteristic pungent odor. This is an alcohol solution of synthetic resin, rosin and polyvinyl butyral with the addition of a special substance that gives the preparation elasticity.

How to use BF-6 glue:

Pre-clean the damaged area of skin with a cotton swab soaked in hydrogen peroxide;
Dry the skin well;
Apply a thin layer (but sufficient to form a protective film) to the damaged area, while capturing areas of healthy skin. This is necessary so that the resulting film has a large area of contact with the skin, which will increase the protective strength.

After the wound or cut has healed, the protective film is easily removed from the skin.

As a rule, BF-6 glue stays on the skin for 1 to 4 days, depending on the nature of the wound/damage and how often the damaged area of the skin will be exposed to water.

Cautions for using BF-6 glue:

Do not apply glue to a cut/wound that has even partial suppuration, it is better to dry it with brilliant green, because under the resulting protective film, pus will not come out of the wound, but on the contrary, accumulate;

Do not apply BF-6 glue to deep and lacerated wounds – it has the peculiarity of a strong burning sensation (albeit short-term), but more than an iodine solution.

Advantages of BF-6 glue:

BF-6 glue has long been recognized as an effective and affordable means for the treatment and healing of wounds, cuts, cracks. It is inexpensive, easy to apply, dries quickly (2-4 minutes), and stays on the skin well (2 to 4 days). It helps wounds heal quickly without the use of bandages or adhesive tape. The protective film that forms on the skin surface reliably protects the damaged area from dirt and water.

In other words, by applying this glue to the damaged area of skin, you can no longer cover your hands and fingers that have been scraped on the rocks, or your feet that have been worn to the point of wounds during a long hike, with meters of adhesive tape, you no longer need to smear kilograms of Vaseline or lip balm on your lips that have been chapped by the sun, and even the “Rescuer” cream will not be as effective in combating bleeding cracks on your fingers. At the same time, BF-6 undoubtedly wins over adhesive tape in that after applying the glue, you can safely expose these areas of skin to water.

Thus, medical glue “BF-6” can be considered an integral part of any camping first aid kit, as well as a first aid kit for extreme tourism and mountaineering.
