Mont Aiguille

Mont Aiguille is a small peak located in the northern mid-latitudes of the Eastern Hemisphere, at 44.8333° N, 5.55° E. Geographically, the peak is classified as follows: Eurasia (Europe), Western Alps, Dauphine Alps.

Mont Aiguille – “Inaccessible Mountain”, 2,000 meters high, which rises like a finger, with equally sheer walls on all sides. This mountain long captured the imagination of the French, and at the behest of Charles VIII, it became the first mountain for mountaineers—the first mountain people decided to climb out of pure curiosity. The summit wasn’t reached until 1492. In addition to the king’s army, a stonecutter, a carpenter, and two priests also took part in the first ascent.

This occurred on June 26, 1492, the year Columbus discovered America, and Rabelais later described it in his Fourth Book.

Dea Augusta Vicontiorum is a small town in the Drôme Valley in France, surrounded by ancient towers and walls. Its inhabitants are engaged in melon and grape cultivation, sericulture, leather production, paper production, and trade in wood, livestock, and wine. Mineral springs and crystal are common in the surrounding area, and the “unattainable” Mont-Aiguille is located 10 km from the city.

From a weather perspective, mountaineering ascents to the summit are best planned for July, August, and September. Resolving the full range of logistical and organizational issues may require significant local knowledge. Intermediate camps will likely be required, but significant sections of the route can already be completed within one or two days of summit pushes. A summit of Mont Eguil’s stature requires a seriously organized climb.
